The Port Authority of Rotterdam, ProRail, and Swietelsky Rail Benelux have officially commenced the construction of the new Maasvlakte Zuid station (EMZ). At a ceremony attended by Dutch and European officials, the project was presented, aiming to expand the capacity of rail freight transport in Rotterdam.
Project Details
The first phase of the project includes:
– **Six sidings** for trains measuring 740 meters in length
– **New connections** to existing tracks
This phase is expected to be completed by mid-2027, as announced by the Port Authority of Rotterdam.
Future Developments
Further phases of the project will follow depending on forecasts for freight growth. The new station will help support the anticipated increase in container traffic from Europe’s largest port to the hinterland.
“The longer trains allow for the transport of more containers in a single trip. This results in fewer train movements, lower emissions, and reduced costs per ton of freight,” explained the Port Authority of Rotterdam.
